A Day Off

July 14, 2017

As fast as this year is passing by it always feels like these last few weeks of term just drag on. There is all sorts of things going on at school for Lucas and my husband, there is always something to remember. The last month the boys had been getting on so well and suddenly they seem to have exploded into choas, constant squabbles and whining, it is as if everyone has just got on top of one another. I seem to constantly be referee and I feel like I’m saying ‘no’ an awful lot. We’re so ready for those summer holidays and a break from the morning rush and routine, it can’t come soon enough.

Finding ourselves with a Sunday free and being unable to spend another moment in the house we decided to pack up our lunch and head over to one of our favourite spots, Crosby Beach. We love it there but we’ve very rarely been on a day when it is sunny, warm AND the tide is in. If you live in the North West you’ll know what a rare occurrence this is for our beaches! Fortunately we timed it right, and even though I was woefully under prepared for paddling the boys stripped of their shoes and socks and waded off into the water. I rolled up their trousers but I needn’t have bothered as within a few minutes they were completely soaked but having the time of their life so I couldn’t complain.

They would have stayed there and played for hours, is there any child that doesn’t love being beside the sea? Mine just never seem to get bored of it. We had planned to wander further up the beach to the Antony Gormley statues and the sand dunes but a clumsy stone throw resulted in Arthur hurting his foot. We made our way back to the car, carrying one very soggy and sad little boy.

Still, it didn’t take the shine off the fun we’d had before hand and I loved taking the time to get away from real life just for a few hours. I took so many photos of the boys while they were playing and I love how they’ve come out, captures them perfectly. Even now, after all these years it still surprises me how much fun they can have doing something so simple. Sometimes the days that you plan the least are the ones when you have the most fun.

I hear you, I say “no” so so much and feel sometimes like I’m the bad cop. There is nothing like a good splash about at the beach and my two would run into it if they could. We are so ready for the big break now too and I’m counting the days down with Z!
