Summer In The City

June 8, 2018

Whenever we take a family trip into Liverpool I always have so many ideas of what we could do; the museums are often high up our list of places to see and the amazing library but we still haven’t taken the boys into the Tate Gallery, the Cathedrals or the Victoria Gallery. Each time I feel like we’re trying to cram in as much as possible. However, having said that sometimes the nicest days are when we don’t have too much to do; days when the sun is shining and you can just wander round seeing all the wonderful things this city has to offer.

Last week we went into Liverpool to check out the Treasure Island reading adventure at Liverpool One; that was amazing and easily wiled away a couple of hours but left us with a bit of time to do something else. The boys still had book and Lego vouchers from Christmas that were burning a hole in their pockets. We went for a spot of lunch and Rococos; it’s a lovely cafe upstairs off Lord Street which lots of little rooms and comfy sofas. I wish I’d taken some photos in there of the big open windows and tiled floors but I was trying to entertain three hungry children instead! The boys happily went on to spend their vouchers and Waterstones had a fun craft table set up with a local author promoting her book, My Colourful Chameleon so we spent a fair bit of time in there…and bought the book!

We slowly made our way down to the Albert Dock, stopping at the grassy steps and listening to the music. Then we found water fountains to splash in and funky street art to spot. Once we reached the dock there was on old ship open for visitors for a small donation so we had a stroll round there and played pirates. We followed the trail of Lambannas down to the Three Graces; the weather was so good we were just happy to wander outside and there is always plenty to see at the Pier Head.

What I love about days like this is that even with minimal planning we can have the most lovely day together. I love that there is so much to see in Liverpool so that even just walking around the city feels like a fun day out. We always end up stumbling across fun things going on and vow to go back and see more. Now the boys are older we don’t feel like we constantly have to move on to keep them entertained – they would have sat on the grassy steps at Liverpool One for far longer that we would have! The gorgeous weather definitely helped and I think on our next free, sunny day we may find ourselves heading into the city again for another explore.

I think it’s a lovely city but I’ve been coming here since I was a baby. I may be biased but I do think it’s a friendly place – you never know, you may visit one day! Weirdly, I’ve never done the Beatles Museum, not sure why but I definitely should at some point! xx

Oh yes, we love the library!! Mine will spend as much time on the roof terrace though as they will looking through the books, then they insist on walking down all the stairs. It’s a lovely place to have close by xx
