Five Books That Are Weird & Wonderful

May 25, 2016

I’m enjoying sharing some of my favourite books on the blog this year and when I was thinking of another five to write about, the weird and the wonderful seemed like the perfect category. I do tend to lean towards books of this kind and many of my most loved books fall into the sci-fi of fantasy genres. I was spoilt for choice when choosing the five but I’ve gone for the ones that are really vivid in my mind, even if it has been years since I’ve read them. When I think of them I have strong images from the stories in my mind, as if I can see the characters and settings, and I remember the weird twists and turns of the tales.

Five Books That Are Weird & Wonderful

The Night Circus – Erin Morgenstern

This book came out a few years ago but I’ve only read in in the last couple of months. It seemed like something I’d usually enjoy and I totally judged the book by it’s cover as it is a good one! It is probably one of my favourite reads of the last few years, might even be one of my favourite books ever. The story starts off and you aren’t sure what is happening and even when you start to get an idea where it might be going there is still so much that keeps you reading. I fell in love with it all, the characters and the descriptions of the quirky night circus; it is just beautifully written and a true love story.

Something Wicked This Way Comes – Ray Bradbury

My husband loves Ray Bradbury and he’s recommended a few of his books to me – they are all fairly weird but this one stands out the most to me. It still creeps me out a bit when I think about it now even though it has been a few years since I read it. I struggle to recall the whole story but I remember it feeling very bizarre when I was reading it. It was quite a hard book to get into but it is well worth it for the incredible story-telling.

The Time Travellers Wide – Audrey Niffenegger

This is another favourite of mine and one I read over and over. I know some people who love it and others who hate it but I am firmly in the ‘love it’ camp. It delves into time-travel and fantasy but I just think of it as a love story. It’s a sign of a good book when they can take something that should be utterly outside of our imaginations and make it totally believable. You really invest in both the main characters Henry and Clare – every time I read it I take something more from it.

Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas – Hunter S Thompson

If you know anything about Hunter S. Thompson you will already know why this is on here. He was an American journalist and this book chronicles a drug-fuelled journey to Las Vegas in the 60’s and all the strange things that go with it. It’s intense to read but incredibly funny. I had already seen the film, which is great, so I had some idea of what was happening! You could easily take it as just a crazy tale but underneath it all is his interpretation of the end of the American Dream.

The Ocean At The End Of The Lane – Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman is one of my favourite authors, all his books are wonderful but this one stuck in my mind the most when I thought about writing this post. When I think about it I remember certain parts and have images stuck in my mind – it definitely made an impact. It feels like a dark, sinister fairytale and I didn’t want to put it down even when it was terrifying me. I found I couldn’t read it too late at night as I had strange dreams but other than that it’s a brilliant book.

I’d love to hear if you have enjoyed any of these books or if there are any other weird and wonderful stories you love.
