My Summer Reading List

Summer Reads 2016 - Books to read over Summer.

With summer now underway, and I sit here glaring at the rainy window, it seemed as good a time as any to share my summer reading list. I don’t know why I’ve thought to do a summer one as I’m not sure I get anymore time to read over summer as I do the rest of the year. We aren’t going on holiday and I don’t really go in for the summer chick lit beach books but it seems as good a time as any to share what I’m hoping to read over the next few month.

I started out with the books I’ve got in the house and then as I stumbled around on Pinterest, Goodreads and Instagram added more and more until I ended up with a totally un-achievable 27 books. I definitely got a little carried away. It goes without saying that I will never read all those between now and September so I’ll just share some of my favourites here and you can see more of the books on my Summer reading list over on my Goodreads Summer shelf.

The Muse – Jessie Burton I’m so excited about this book, it comes out on the 30th June and it’s Jessie Burtons second novel after her debut The Miniaturist which was one of my favourite reads from last year. I hope it is just as good, I fell in love with the characters in The Miniaturist and I really like her style of writing. Also, it has a great cover – always tempts me.

Of Mice & Men – John Steinback This is one of those books I’ve always meant to read and I’ve seen a lot about it on social media recently as this is the last year it is being taught in high schools. This post, from a teacher, especially struck a chord and I thought it was about time I gave it a read.

A Monster Calls – Patrick Ness I read The Crane Wife from Patrick Ness last year and have been meaning to read more since – he has a really unique writing style and I believe A Monster Calls is coming out as a movie this year so I’d like to read it first.

A Wise Man’s Fear – Patrick Rothfuss This is the second book in a series of fantasy books by Patrick Rothfuss, my brother leant me the first one, The Name Of The Wind and I LOVE them. They are very long and it took a while for me to get into but then I couldn’t put it down, probably some of the best fantasy literature I’ve ever read.

World Without End – Ken Follett I really enjoyed Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett so I started this book last summer but only read a few pages before deciding it was too long. I’m determined to give it another go while I’m in a good reading phase.

True Letters From a Fictional Life – Kenneth Logan This was one I spotted on Instagram and it sounded just like my kind of book – it’s about a teenage boy who writes letters to himself while he is coming to terms with being gay as the outside world still see’s him as the perfect heartthrob. I think it is out now on Kindle and comes out in hardback middle of July.

Station Eleven – Emily St.John Mandel I’ve seen a lot of love for this book recently and it does sound like something I’d enjoy. My friend Karen recommended it to me which finally made my mind up to try it – I usually like a lot of what she reads.

A Man Called Ove – Fredrick Backman Another one I’ve been meaning to read all year and another recommended to me by a friend, Vicki. The author is a Swedish blogger which is enough for me to want to give it a read.

The Spy Who Came In From The Cold – John Le Carre Me and my husband read quite different books and occasionally we’ll have a deal that he’ll read one of mine and I’ll read one of his. He is a massive John Le Carre fan and this is the one he’s chosen for me – I passed over The Night Circus to him.

100 Years of Solitude – Gabriel Garcia Marquez My husband bought this for me last year and I still haven’t gotten around to reading it – another one of those you always see on ‘must read’ lists, another I hope to get through over the next few months!

You would think I have enough to be going on with but if you have a summer reading list I would love to see it!

I have The Miniaturist on my TBR pile, which is a very big pile, so I’m now thinking I should move it further up! Happy reading

Hayley you are such a good reader and I envy the amount of books you get through. What’s the secret? I have 4 or 5 I want to read but rarely find time…when do you do your reading? These sound great x

If I find I’m in the right frame of mind I’ll read most evening before bed…or in the bath! If I’m really into a book I’ll sometimes try and carve out a few minutes to read in the day while the boys are having lunch. Some times I won’t pick up a book for weeks though, it’s hard to keep it up when you’re so busy with little ones! xx
