A Bedroom For A Little Adventurer

Little Adventurer Boy's Bedroom (1 of 13)

As much fun as it is decorating children’s bedrooms I am beginning to realise it gets more difficult as they get older. When we first decorated Lucas’ room it was so easy, we decided what was going in and he loved it all. This time round he has very strong opinions about what should or should not be there – we have had countless discussions about the placement of a map! It’s hard trying to find the balance between a room that they love and a room that I don’t look at in horror. I don’t like to have too many character things in there as he’ll inevitably get bored of it so this time round we tried to go with something that won’t seem dated in six months and we can change it round. I hope this room will grow with him now and doesn’t seem too babyish. It’s a loose explorer/adventurer/animal theme which I’d planned out at the beginning of the year and wrote up a wishlist. As he’s made it his own there are all sorts of pirates and superheroes so really it’s just an eclectic boys room that totally reflects him.

It’s been finished for a few months now but it’s such a small space it’s hard to get decent, light photos. We didn’t do any real decorating this time round, the carpet and wallpaper stayed the same and we already had his wardrobe, curtains and a few others bits and bobs I’d been waiting to put in there. One of the twins has his old toddler bed so we bought him an extending bed from Ikea, one of the few we could find to fit in the room. We also used an Ikea bedside table as a little desk so he has a space to draw his ‘creations’ in peace.

I’m so happy with how it has turned out – I still need a new lampshade but I haven’t seen anything that catches my eye yet. There is also a big blank wall behind his door that I haven’t quite figured out what to do with so any ideas would be appreciated. I’ve got storage boxes on top of the wardrobe and under bed storage full of Lego and Playmobil. His books at the moment are kept in an Ikea spice rack that I painted, we’ve kept that in but I do have to rotate the books quite often now so it might have to be updated for more book storage.

Although it is a small space we’ve managed to cram in full of things to look at and bright colours. There is still enough floor space for him to get his toys out and play. I like that’s there is lots of space to display his treasures and it’s full of things that are special to him – maybe too full! I’m sharing a few more photos below, this is when it’s relatively tidy and there are usually about twenty more soft toys on the bed. I’ll try to link to where I’ve bought things from, as long as I can remember.

What a fantastic bedroom. I would never want to leave it if I was Lucas πŸ˜€ I’m going to look out for a big Z cushion for my Z I think!

They are cute aren’t they?! I’m so pleased with how it’s turned out, Lucas has days when he loves it and days when he wants to change it all round πŸ™‚

Looks great, a real little adventurer’s room! What about this cheap and cheerful lampshade from IKEA while you look for something you really like: http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/70325289/? #HomeEtc

Thanks Bon, it suits him so much better now as it was starting to look a little babyish for a four year old!

Love what you’ve done here Hayley! My littlest’s room is small, too, so it’s good to get ideas for how to place the furniture etc so that she has room to play. I too have seen some nice lampshades in IKEA- do they do the cloud one still or is that too babyish? #HomeEtc

What a gorgeous little room! You are very wise to not go down the superhero route – my son is Star Wars mad and begged for a Star Wars themed bedroom. It’s almost completed (it has taken forever to get him to decide what he actually wants in there!), and i’m really hoping that he doesn’t move onto some other craze as soon as it’s done! πŸ˜‰ xxx #HomeEtc

That is clever wallpaper for a little space Hayley β€” vertical stripes will make it seem much taller and give the illusion of space and height. What a fab little room for a little boy! I love the map on the wall and all the little adventure references β€” Just GORGEOUS! πŸ™‚ Thanks so much for linking up with us darling! Caro x #HomeEtc

It looks great Hayley. I love the map, cushions, bedding and brightness. I hope he is loving it.

We are approaching doing our kids rooms as they look dire with drawing on the walls and generally no theme to them, but I am dreading the same opinions and specifics being dictated by a 5yr old haha I struggle with the clutter and little bits they hang onto so need to find some baskets or whatever to keep them all tidy x

It looks lovely, perfect for a little boy. I know what you mean about it being difficult as they get older as they start to have opinions. O was adamant he wanted a Lightning McQueen bedroom but I just couldn’t being myself to put that wallpaper up, especially when he is likely to get bored with it. The compromise was I chose the wallpaper and he had some Lightning wallstickers. He does still keep asking when the matching wallpaper is coming though! xx

That’s such a fab room Hayley. I love all the little touches! We are just planning H room at the moment and he is insisting on Star Wars but I don’t really fancy Darth Varder wall paper myself!!!
