Little Adventurer – Boy’s Bedroom

January 27, 2016

The time has come to update Lucas’ bedroom. When we first decorated he was about to move into the smaller room (to make space for two baby brothers) and we chose lots of bright colours and car stickers to make it fun for a nearly two-year old. It has served him well but all of a sudden it seems way to young for him. Now it needs to be a proper boy’s bedroom and on top of that we need to get him a new bed, those pesky brothers of his are ready for his toddler bed so he will be treated to a brand new one.

Little did I know how difficult this would be, his tiny room is actually so tiny that it won’t fit in a full size single bed which meant I have been hunting out some of the best options to make the most of the space. As much as I loved the idea of a cabin bed it would have to go against the wall with the window which means his bed would be above the window – I wasn’t too keen on that idea. After a lot of research, hours spent with me grumbling at the internet and cursing our new build home, the SUNDVIK extending bed from Ikea seemed like the best option. It can be extended as the child grows and we should be able to fit it into the space available…I hope!

Boy's Bedroom Adventure, Explorer, Oudooors

Blue Teepee Lightshade – Not On The Highstreet £35          Grey Wall Tidy – H&M – £7.99

Red Table – Ikea £20                                                              Star Bedding – H&M £15

Desk Lamp – Ikea £10                                                            Camping Style Light – John Lewis £12

World Map – All Posters £7.99                                                Striped Rug – John Lewis £25

Multi-coloured Rugs – Ikea £5                                                 Nordic Blue Throw – John Lewis £30

SUNDVIK Extending Bed – Ikea £135                                      Bear Cushion – George Home £7

EKBY Wall Shelf – Ikea £12

I find it so much easier to put everything together like this and see what I like. I didn’t want to go for a theme as such but it is a bit of an outdoors/explorer/adventurer style. I still want something that Lucas will love but not that he’ll grow out of in a year. He absolutely loves his Atlas and looking up countries and animals so a massive world map was a must. I have a house shaped shelf ready to go up and fancy a couple of the wooden ones from Ikea to put all his treasures on, I’m thinking binoculars and a compass can find there way on there too. I love the little bear cushion from George Home and the hurricane style lamp from John Lewis. I’m not sure we quite have the space for a desk but the red bedside table will fit perfectly. I want to frame some photographs and prints to go in there but I’m still trying to choose my favourites.

I’m looking forward to making a start on it and seeing it all come together. The difference with decorating now he is four is that he has started to give his opinion on the room too, his has his own ideas for a boy’s bedroom. His requests so far include three beds and a whale cushion (only one of those is a possibility). When this is all done we will be onto the twins room!

Check out my Pinterest board for more boys bedroom inspiration and any advice on making the most of a tiny bedroom would be greatly appreciated.

Hayley Jack used to have a tiny room, our rooms are not that big here but this room was tiny. I got him a high cabin bed and built a desk and storage area below but making the bed was a nightmare. I love your choices, they are so cute, joe would have loved this, he is such an outdoors type x

Argh it has been such a nightmare Sarah! I cabin bed would be ideal, so good if you can get a desk underneath too but it just won’t go with the layout of the room. I have no idea how we are going to make the bed in the room, will cross that bridge when we come to it 🙂 xx

Love these ideas, the bedding is really nice. I would like that for Charlie’s bedroom! Isn’t it fun decorating kids bedrooms? I hope the boys are pleased with the final product! xxx

I know, it always seems like so much more fun to decorate a kids room doesn’t it? I guess you can be a bit more quirky and get away with it with children!

Gorgeous picks, all that little bit more grown up for him. I love that camping light and the idea of a map poster for him. My girl has a globe that she really enjoys studying. She has an extending Ikea bed, too, has had for a few years, so it’s serving us well. Have fun with this x

That’s good to know Jocelyn, I’ve been looking at beds for so long but this one seemed like the best solution. I am excited to get started, some children are just fascinated by maps aren’t they? I think it is lovely xx

Oh we had a house that size once too, in fact this one isn’t much bigger, Ella’s room is tiny. I love everything you have picked there Hayley, especially the globe, how cute that he picks out the countries already xxx

I had no idea when we bought it that the room was quite so small, they are crafty with the showhome! Then again I never imagined we would have twins so it didn’t matter at the time 🙂 Lucas has an obsession with Africa at the moment so we spend a lot of time looking at that, he thinks we can drive there one weekend though! xx

I share your pain on the little bedroom front, we’ve got one of those too which did have a bed in it when we viewed the house but I have no idea how! I’m glad you’ve found a solution and the room will look fab when finished X #HomeEtc

It looks perfect, Hayley!!! They’re similar colours that I initially chose for my boys. Unfortunately, they’ve now developed opinions (how dare they!!!) and my eldest loves teal. Teal! I didn’t even know that was a colour until last year. And my littlest loves orange one day, black the next, and the yellow, so I’ve no idea what to do with him 🙂

I feel your pain on the opinions…I think when it is all done I will take photos of how I would have it, then Lucas will move everything round to how he wants it!! I love that your eldest loves Teal, you can tell he is your son 🙂

Hello gorgeous! Thanks so much for linking up with us! As we were hit with the dreaded winter sick bug last week, I’m so behind with my comments. Just catching up now! Totally love these pics — especially the tee-pee lampshade!! And I’ve always wanted an entire wall covered in a map of the world — how amazing would that be? xx

PS #HomeEtc is live tomorrow from 6.30am xx

Not to worry Caro, I know how crazy your last week was! I was actually looking at big map murals that go on the wall!! They are amazing but Lucas’ room is so small that I don’t think they’d work with the layout, I can’t wait to put all the finishing touches in for him xx

As soon as I started reading I thought of the extending beds from Ikea! You have some gorgeous items picked out Hayley. I particularly like the red table and the bear cushion. I would love them for myself, never mind my three boys!

I must admit that I have already bought the little cushion and was quite tempted to keep it for myself…it is so cute! I find it so much easier to pick out things for little one’s rooms than I do for myself 🙂

I love it, such gorgeous pieces!
They grow up so fast don’t they, Skye has her own ideas now too about how she wants her room to look etc, but she is sharing with Sophia so it’s all abit of a mix at the moment!
Looking forward to seeing Lucas’ bedroom when it is finished x

I love the teepee lampshade! I know just what you mean, Florence’s room is tiny so when she goes in a bed there will not be much floor space!! xx
