Picture Ledge Styling

Ikea Picture Ledges

Last month I wrote a post about the picture ledges we’d put up in our living room. We’d rearranged the room and had a big blank wall which was just crying out for a feature. I absolutely love them but there were in need of a little TLC – I had basically gathered every photo frame we had in the house and sat them all on there without too much thought. In my head I wanted the ledges to be more of a mix of prints, quotes, photographs and other little bits and bobs. It has taken a little longer than I thought to collect everything to update them but I think they are done for a little while. I still want to add a few new photographs in there

Picture Ledge Before & After

As you can see I’ve taken away a few of the photos and added in some framed postcards, prints and record covers. As I was getting the Christmas decorations down I was able to raid them for a few little touches.

Picture Ledge Prints

The Home print is from the very talented Caro at The Twinkle Diaries and you can download your very own as a printable from her blog. Then I raided the IKEA market place for frames, trinkets, candles and plants. The tiny little plant was the smallest one I could find to fit on the ledge and it was only £1! I so wanted to add a little green colour and I plan to add a few more, as long as I can keep them alive! The friends quote is a card from my best friend, every time I read it I think of her. The Wuthering Heights quote I had been lusting after for a while so I finally treated myself and bought one from Dottie Rocks, I love the gold lettering and the chunky Ribba frame sets it off perfectly. The last print was from my friend Vicki, she put together the home one for me too and I am so happy with them.

Picture Ledge Photos

I often pick up cards with quotes or expressions on when I spot them and then never quite find anything to do with them. The ‘Tea is the Finest Solution’ is a card I picked up in a little bookshop in Liverpool just because it caught my eye and I do love tea. It’s nice to have something to do with it now. The tiny wooden Christmas trees we picked up at a local Christmas craft fayre last year, I had completely forgotten about them until we started unpacking decorations. I love it when we get everything out and find little treasures I’ve bought over the years. I suppose I will have to take them down after Christmas but for now they have a nice home on these shelves.

Picture Ledge Trinkets

The green squirrel was from a set of postcards from IKEA (as is the orange deer on the top shelf). I like that these are easy to change around, after Christmas I’ll probably add something new to these frames. I picked up the orange owl candle whilst mooching round Matalan; this little chap was only £3, they have some lovely things in their home section. The Frank Turner record I added for something different and the wooden fist we have had forever, my husband usually keeps it with all his revolutionary books but I’ve borrowed it for now.

Picture Ledge Styling Ideas

I needed something to big to add the the top shelf so grabbed a Bruce Springsteen record from our collection. It was only meant to be temporary to balance out the frames but actually I quite like having LP’s up there and they can so easily be changed round. The Wuthering Heights postcard I must have had for about 8 years since me and the husband visited the Bronte museum in Haworth. I keep these things hidden away for so long and I hope a few will get an airing now.

Picture Ledge Living Room

I love these picture ledges, they are so versatile and I’ve picked up a couple of the smaller new ones for our hallway which have a groove running along the shelf to rest your pictures in…genius! Everytime I look up at them I smile and we have had some lovely comments from visitors, our house is a new build and we still haven’t decorated properly but adding these little touches has made it more homely.

I’ve gathered a few other ideas on my pinterest board but some of my favourites are Mummy Daddy Me, who uses them as book storage in her girls amazing colourful bedroom. The Ordinary Lovely has the cutest little ledge over her bed with little mementos and prints on it and Inside Out and About has a great mix of family photos and flowers on hers. Have a look over my Pinterest board for more inspiration.

I need to get all my prints displayed like this. Most of them are languishing on the floor. I love your mix of prints. So many of them I want in my collection too.

It looks fab, Hayley, and you’ve found exactly what I’m currently looking for … a little plant which fits on the shelf. I’ve been really struggling to find one. I’ve just ordered a new print which I think you’ll love. I’ll let you know when it arrives x

I do indeed LOVE your new print! The trouble is I love the ones I have up there so much I’ll have a hard time changing them round. Ikea had several tiny plants, I knew it would be the place to find one 🙂 xx

I feel like I want a ledge now. One of my dreams is to have a little office with quotes all over the wall. One day…. ☺️

Love the shelf! I want one in my hall once it’s done (if it’s ever done)!! My house is totally the same in that it’s covered in Lego, mega blocks, dinosaurs, and teenage mutant ninja turtles. I’ve half given up on tidying up as it gets pulled back out almost immediately after. Waste of energy if you ask me! xxx

Exactly, I can’t keep the kids stuff out of any room so I’m settling for little corners of my house being a space for me. Next project will be bedside table although that does in fact have Lego on it! I hope you get your shelf…and your hall! xx

Hayley it looks fab. I love that it all means something to you. I am trying to decide what to do with the wall over my desk, its a big decision although there is a Lilly Bollinger quote I love so could most definitely add that x

Yes, I did try to go for things that kind of reflected us. I’m not really very good with interiors but I thought at least if I made it important to us it would be a step in the right direction! I think it’s a great idea to have things where you are working, inspirational quotes and prints xx

Happy new year darling! I cannot BELIEVE I totally forgot to do all my comments for the last #HomeEtc. So much was going on just before Christmas but that’s no excuse!! Am so naughty!! AND sorry!!!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE what you’ve done with this!!!! Looks amazing — and so personal too, with all the little quotes and knick-knacks. Thank you SO much for the lovely mention too 🙂

I can’t believe that eye-test card though!!! My eyes nearly popped out of my head when I saw it! I designed a similar range for not on the high street years ago!! They sell really well too 🙂 Great minds eh?!

Looking forward to starting another year of #HomeEtc tomorrow — I hope that you’ll come and join us xxx
