Beautiful Floral Gins For Summer

May 17, 2017

I don’t think it has escaped anyone’s notice that the humble gin is bang on trend right now, with cocktails and festivals it seems to be the drink that everyone can enjoy. I must admit that I’ve only recently taken to it, for years I turned it down so sure that I didn’t like it. However, it turns out that I just hadn’t found the right gin! It’s come a long way in the last few years and quite a few people have made it their mission to convert me. Luckily for me this is the perfect time to discover new varieties.

31dover.com were kind enough to send me two lovely special editions, perfect for those summer months and just in time for the Chelsea Flower Show. I’m discovering that floral gins are the ones for me, possibly because they don’t taste quite as strongly of gin but of all sorts of lovely different flavours. Masons Lavender Edition Yorkshire Gin is possibly the nicest gin I’ve tried so far and you could not go wrong with Edinburgh Gins Elderflower Liqueur. I was initially planning to make a cocktail with each but if I’m honest it masks the subtle taste if you do anything too complicated. Of course I had to test both when they arrived and I while I couldn’t claim to be a gin expert I would definitely suggest keeping it simple and letting the beautiful flavours shine through. If you’re a gin newcomer like me, I would highly recommend trying either of these.

First up is the Lavender Gin and is so much nicer than you would think, even if you aren’t sure about mixing lavender and gin I’m sure you’d be pleasantly surprised. The lavender flavour isn’t overpowering as I thought it may be but it adds a little sweetness. The flavour is delicate and totally unforgettable, it’s all too tempting to reach for. I love it with a glass of chilled tonic water and a handful of frozen strawberries. My husband isn’t a fan of tonic so he enjoyed his with San Pellegrino Sparkling Lemon, this made it super refreshing and has actually brought him round to the gin craze!

The Elderflower Liquer from Edinburgh Gins is absolutely summer in a glass. It’s made by infusing Edinburgh Gin with Scottish elderflowers and it is the perfect combination. I love anything elderflower, such a sweet and refreshing taste. The bottle suggests serving it with champagne or sparkling wine, now as much as I would love to have champagne to hand I’m afriad we don’t however we nearly always have a bottle of prosecco in the fridge so I paired it with that and a couple of apple slices. This was very good, in fact almost too good and it was all to easy to sit out in the sun and enjoy a glass or two.

Have you tried either of these? I’d love to hear what your favourite gin is, I think I may be ready to branch out!

Thank you 31dover.com for sending me these gins to review. As always all words and thoughts are my own.

You know me Hayley, I love a good gin, so I was keen to read your thoughts on this brand and the flavours. Definitely a brand to add to my list! I love the sound of the elderflower one in particular. x

These sound lovely Hayley, gin and tonic has always been my tipple, so I look forward to trying one or two of these out! If you like floral gins you’d probably love our local gin, Rock Rose, made by Dunnet Bay Distillers – it’s divine! xx

Nice floral gins there! Have tried both and they are lovely summery gins. You should definitely give Pinkster and JJ Whitley Elderflower a go if you like these!

These sound lovely! I’ve only started getting into gin over the last couple of years, but it’s one of my favourite drinks now. So refreshing! Elderflower is always my go to, but I’d be interested to try the lavender one xxxxx
