Pizza in the City – Crust Liverpool

Crust Pizza Liverpool

Half term is always such a busy time and I love that we get to spend time together as a family but by the end of the break I was looking forward to a visit to Liverpool we had planned, just me my husband and Lucas. We had been asked to go and try out Italian restaurant, Crust on Bold Street and it was the perfect opportunity to spend the day with Lucas. My Mum kindly entertained the twins for us and on a rainy Saturday we caught the train into Liverpool with a very excited four year old.

We visit Liverpool regularly but I must admit it can be a bit of a headache finding somewhere to eat with Lucas. He’s a terribly fussy eater and if we are all there I want somewhere that can fit us in and is child friendly. In the end we go to the old reliable chain restaurants in the main shopping area just because you know what you are getting. They aren’t particularly inspiring, just convenient. However, I love to eat in independent restaurants and Crust assured me that they are family friendly so we were looking forward to putting that to the test.

When we first arrived we were quickly greeted and seated near the big windows, perfect for people watching. It was fairly quiet but it soon filled up and there was a real mix of people coming in, lots of families and some with pushchairs which were fairly easy to get in and out. I noticed plenty of high chairs dotted around the restaurant and the staff were very helpful. At the back of the restaurant you can see the open kitchen, which I always think is a nice touch and there is a spacious downstairs.

Crust Menu

I loved the menu, there was lots of variety without it being too overwhelming. We were chatting to the manager afterwards and in addition to all the vegetarian and gluten free options they also do a vegan pizza which uses vegan cheese, so if you have any special requirements it is worth asking! There isn’t a separate kids menu but most kids enjoy pizza and pasta so there isn’t a great need for it. I had to go for a margarita pizza as I was sharing with Lucas so added a side of fries and some fried zucchine – this was a good choice, I would go there for the fried zucchine alone!

I knew my husband would be tempted to try something adventurous and I could see his eyes light up when we were told about the black dough. You can choose between four bases for your pizzas and here is what the menu says about the black dough, ‘This unique and healthy black dough uses a natural vegetable charcoal, recommended to improve your insides and assist in detoxifying the body.’  Sounds good right? A way to make pizza feel a little healthier! I was a little sceptical when it arrived but it tasted incredible, not at all how I imagined and my husband has now decalred that every pizza should have black dough. The pizzas were perfect and just what I would think of as an authentic Italian pizza, thin, crispy and delicious.

They also have a fantastic drinks menu with a tempting array of local ales and craft beers, in the end we went for two of their special fresh lemonades and they were just as good as they look. I love that the food arrives quickly, there is nothing worst than waiting for food with a small person to entertain. Everything was very reasonably priced and our bill came to around £25 for the three of us which I think is great considering the quality of food and the care that goes into it.

Crust Drinks

Even my little fussy eater enjoyed himself – after downing the fresh apple juice he declared the pizza ‘mmm, great’ Sadly they didn’t have any ice cream when we were in so he didn’t get to test out their homemade gelato but it gives us a good reason for a return visit. As much as I wanted to try out one of their dessert pizzas (nutella on pizza is surely a match made in heaven?!) I was so full I couldn’t even finish the main one. This was boxed up for us to take away and enjoy later.

Next time you are looking for somewhere different to eat in Liverpool I would absolutely recommend Crust, it’s somewhere easy and reasonable to take the little ones, good, classic Italian food with great atmosphere and friendly staff. For more drool-worthy photographs of their delicious food check them out on Facebook and if you go and give the black pizza a try I’d love to hear what you think!

You can’t go wrong with Pizza. The menu sounds great & I am not surprised that James went for the black dough – he does like to try the obscure. We will have to pop in next time we are up.
