The End of Reception

Dear Lucas

We are reaching the end of your first full year in school and for all the worry and nerves it has just flown by. I’m not sure I have enough words to fully express how proud I am of you, this year has seen you change in ways I didn’t expect as I’ve watched you grow up right in front of me. It’s gone so quickly I struggle to explain what is different about you now, it’s more a feeling I get when I look at you. I can see the wonderful person you are going to become and realise you are getting further away from being my baby boy. So many little things this year have changed and made you seem older, more independent and confident as you become a part of something that is all yours.

This morning I watched you in your assembly, reception and year six children together as a welcome and goodbye. You sat there so well – got up on stage at the right time, sang along and joined in with the actions. You saw me and your brothers in the crowd and waved to us while smiling the sweetest smile. You came out at the end to give us all a big hug and kiss and your face lit up when I told you what a great job you did. I thought my heart would burst and you went back to class smiling with tears in your eyes. I don’t think I even realised how far you have come this last year until I saw you today.

What an amazing school you are in and there is so much kindness from everyone. I love that the year six children joined in with all your nursery rhyme songs and you all got up and sang together at the end. This morning there were a lot of tears. You won’t even realise yet how special it is to find a school like yours. Somewhere that still manages to put the children first, a place where you have the time to enjoy being a child and they teach you so much more than English and maths. They know you so well and your teacher has been the most supportive of all. They give you everything I could have wished for.

We were given your school report this week and you are exactly where you should be, which is amazing, but I loved that they talked about how much you love the woodland, playing with lego, the home corner and how you make pretend cups of tea and cakes for the staff. They say you have a great interest in the world around you and you’ve made some good friends, you love to play with them especially outdoors, which we already know! Your confidence has grown each month but these last few weeks I’ve really seen it shine through. You’ve been so eager to take things in for show and talk at the front on the class. You bring home notes and drawings from your friends and take things in for them. You aren’t in the least bit competitive yet when you won a race at sports day your whole face lit up and you punched the air. All these little things make me happier than any school result, you are happy and secure and I think you will always feel free to be yourself in school which is all I ever really wanted.

I’ve spent most of the morning with tears in my eyes, this is another big milestone for you – the end of you being the babies of the school. Next year you’ll be in Year One, that sounds so old to me, to have my little boy in Year One. We have some tough times with you, you seem to have spells when you battle against us constantly and your emotions always run high. However, there are some truly special things about you too – you are never afraid to be yourself, you are happy to do something different to everyone else. You soak in information about everything and are so knowledgeable about things but you often keep it to yourself. If you don’t think it’s necessary you won’t tell us! You get excited about us spending time together and the littlest things, like a movie night, mean the most to you.

It was hard for us all as you started school, the youngest in the year and I was so unsure about how it would be. You’d been at home with me for so long and it was strange to say goodbye to that. If I could go back to September I wish I could tell myself all the amazing things you have done this year. I can’t wait to see you go on into the next year now, you always surprise us in the best possible way and I know it will be an exciting time for you. Before then though we have the whole summer together and we’ll be working our way through the list of things you want to do. Top of the list is camping and going to the beach my little wild one. I can’t wait to have you back for a few weeks before you start the next adventure in September. We are so incredibly proud of you Lucas, what a wonderful year you’ve had.

All My Love

Mummy

Aww! This is just adorable…You sound so proud and have every reason to be….Going from reception to year one seems like such a big step but I’m sure your boy will handle it well like he has this year…Good luck x

Awwww Hayley. This is such a lovely milestone post. He’s such a lovely boy and do you remember how we both kept saying we didn’t want to send our boys? Zs at such a lovely school too and I’m so glad I picked that one. I got Zs official school report today and I never thought I’d be the mum that would get all choked up at it but I did. It says such sweet things about him.

I can’t believe L has finished his first year at School. You must be so proud of him. The Summer holidays will be a well needed break before September come round.
