I’ve been giving Lucas a new Christmas book every week over December and this weeks addition to our festive reads is Dear Santa by Rod Campbell. This was one of the recommendations when I bought The Jolly Christmas Postman and seen as Dear Zoo is a firm favourite with Lucas I thought I’d try this one too. I have not been disappointed and Lucas has fallen in love with this book. Instead of writing to the zoo, the child in this book is writing to Santa and he sends several presents that are either ‘too big’ or ‘too messy’ until he sends the perfect one. Like Dear Zoo it is a lift the flap book which toddlers always love and it’s a great way of involving them in the story. As much as I loved The Jolly Christmas Postman it is aimed at children older than Lucas; it is a book that he can grow up with whereas Dear Santa is perfect for him now but may only keep his attention for another year.
I keep all our Christmas and wintery books in a tub in the living room and this one is out every day. Lucas will sit and look though the pictures himself or bring it to me so I can read it too him. Sometimes I will find him turning the pages and lifting the flaps himself and it’s a great for little ones associating words with pictures as you say what is behind each flap. This book definitely has Lucas’ seal of approval!
